Am I going to be ok?

By Sarah Egan

The real focus of financial planning isn’t money; it’s achieving your life goals before running out of time.  Time and money are similar in that you choose how to spend them, but you can only spend them once. Unlike money, you can’t make more time. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. We have only one life, and it’s not a rehearsal.

Financial planning is about helping people understand what a fulfilling life looks like and how to fund it. As a financial planner, I ensure people have the right money at the right time for what they need to do.  If you think financial planning is just about pensions, investments, and life insurance, you’ve been misled. The financial services industry promotes this to sell more products.

The Chartered Insurance Institute describes financial planning as a service to help individuals, families, and businesses organise their finances to achieve their goals.

Financial planning ensures you won’t regret your life in later years. The key question is, “How much is enough?”, “Will I be okay?” and “Will my family be okay?” These questions provide peace of mind.  You don’t want to leave your loved ones without enough money or die with too much, missing out on life experiences. After paying bills, you can only spend money on fun, invest it, or give it away.  We want you to reflect on your life, focusing on what you did, not what you missed. Enjoy passing wealth to your children while you’re alive to see them benefit.

A true financial plan requires detail and thoughtful assumptions. It answers deep questions like, “What are the essential elements of a fulfilled life for you?” Most people think they know, but often need help to articulate it.
