Our top tips for budgeting this New Year

By Anne Manning

So… it is the New Year of 2023 – and along with this time of year come the New Year’s resolutions.

Would you like to exercise more, lose weight, change career or would you like to have a better handle on your finances and budgeting?

Well, in relation to your finances and budgeting there are some easy steps that you can take in order to feel more in control.

“A budget tells us what we can’t afford, but it doesn’t keep us from buying it.” – William Feather

“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” – Dave Ramsey

Firstly, you need to relax and not overthink this task.  You can start by making a simple list and dividing your page into two halves.  On one side of the page, list your Income including your salary and any other increments you receive and on the other side – list all of your Direct Debits and Standing Orders.  A key thing when you are doing this task is to remember that you need to include your food, petrol, and social outgoings; otherwise, it is not a true reflection on what you spend.

When it comes to budgeting, there are also many websites that you can look at for inspiration, one example is moneyhelper.org.  Looking at budgeting websites provide you with the tools to make your money go further and this is a goal that most of us would like to achieve.

You can also access Budget planners, car costs calculators and much more online.

Believe me when I say that this simple budgeting exercise can make you feel a lot more in control of your financial circumstances.  The power of knowing your financial position is a great feeling and one that can give you a great boost.
