Our very own Olympian

By Huw Jones

Having a former Olympian in the office is cool.  But things have just got a bit more exciting in the run up to London 2012 for Proposito’s marketing manager Joanne Jones.

Joanne was a member of Great Britain’s synchronised swimming team at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. However, she has just been selected to play a very important part in the London 2012 Olympics.  Here’s an extract from a letter she has just received from Andy Hunt, CEO of the British Olympic Association & Chef de Mission of Team GB London 2012:

I am delighted to be writing to inform you that you have been chosen to participate in London 2012 Ticketshare. British Olympians were chosen on the basis of their ability and experience in communicating and inspiring young people as expressed in the relevant and optional section on the Olympian Ticket Programme Application form.

He goes on to say…

As a reminder, Ticketshare is an inspirational scheme which provides tickets at no cost for young people to attend the Games. The full price of these tickets is funded through a levy on London 2012 Prestige Ticketing hospitality packages. The scheme aims to inspire those young people involved in one of the 33 National Governing Body (NGB) networks to achieve their dreams and to live by the Olympic Values. The British Olympic Association has extended this scheme to include Olympians allowing them to accompany these young people to London 2012 and further inspire the next generation to participate in sport.

What an amazing honour!

If you’re like me and grew up in the late 80’s you’d love a look through her photos from the games – it’s like a who’s who of our favourite sporting legends. Her stories are even better. She was in the stadium to watch “that” 100m final, saw the GB boys win hockey gold and still has a Korean policeman’s hat after an incident with Steve Cram at the closing ceremony.

Perhaps next summer she’ll be showing some of Great Britain’s future sporting stars around the Olympics and inspiring them to one day join her as a British Olympian and collect their own Olympic memories.
