Staying safe online this Christmas

By Jade Shelton

During the holiday season, it’s more important than ever to be vigilant when it comes to online safety. With increased online shopping and social media activity, scammers are on the lookout for potential victims. Here are some tips to help you stay safe online this Christmas.

Be wary of too-good to be true deals

If an online deal or discount looks too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often lure victims in with the promise of unbelievable discounts. Always verify the legitimacy of the seller and the deal before making a purchase.

Things to watch out for are:

  • Facebook and Google Adverts – Always beware of these.  If you are intent on downloading something via an advert then make sure that description matches it’s header.
  • QR codes – These are on the rise recently and can sometimes take you to a website whose name you won’t be able to see.
  • Domain names (URL) – Always check these.  Instead of just clicking on a link, you’re better off searching for it yourself on Google.  That way you’re more likely to find what you are looking for.

Keep your personal information private

Never share your personal information, such as your address, phone number, or bank details, with anyone you don’t trust. Be particularly wary of unsolicited requests for personal information.

Use secure payment methods

When shopping online, always use secure payment methods, such as credit cards or PayPal. These methods often offer buyer protection and can help you get your money back if you fall victim to a scam.

Update your software

Regularly update your software, including your operating system and browsers. Updates often include security patches that can protect you from known vulnerabilities that scammers may try to exploit.

Stay vigilant, be skeptical, and stay safe this holiday season!
